Faculty Position in Architecture and Sustainability


Institution       

The Berne University of Applied Sciences (BUAS) is a multifaceted, future oriented institution with around 5000 students. The School of Architecture, Wood and Civil Engineering is one of the leading educational establishments for construction and engineering in Switzerland. The department is considered a competence centre with both national and international reputation and links. In wood technology, it is the only university of applied sciences of its kind in Switzerland while meeting and exceeding international standards.

Program       

From 2008 on, the Faculty of Architecture of the BUAS offers an unprecedented postgraduate program in architecture, titled MAS BUAS ARCH in Sustainable Development (Master of Advanced Studies, Berne University of Applied Science, in Architecture, Sustainable Development). The course is an international one-year full-time program in English / Chinese, focusing on sustainable architecture in China and mostly targeting Chinese mid-career architects. In view of the country being in a situation of rapid unsustainable development but the Chinese government paying more and more attention to the issue, sustainable architecture becomes increasingly necessary and relevant to Chinese architecture professionals.

The program features three segments, namely
Module 01: Building knowledge base in sustainable development
4 weeks lecture and seminar series in Berne, Switzerland
Module 02: Analytical architectural workshop
10 weeks literature studies and skill building in China
Module 03: Studio projects and master thesis in sustainable architecture
21 weeks design studios and thesis composition in China

The Berne University of Applied Science in Switzerland is the sole responsible for the course and ultimately also awards the diplomas. The degree grants the successful candidates the right to bear an academic title and the additional term of the completed field of specialization. For the first year, the course is expected to attract 40-50 students.
Position       

The position holder will be required to lead and organize this post-professional course in sustainable architecture in the China location. He/She will be responsible for further development, coordination and provision of lectures, tutorials, design studios, seminars and reviews in the teaching area of sustainable architecture in China. He/She will represent the only permanent member in a teaching team of guest lecturers and part time faculty at the China location. The position holder will spend most of the academic year in China and about 1.5 months per academic year in Switzerland, supporting module 01 with lectures and administrative work.
Current locations in China include Shenzhen and Shanghai. The first one-year program, starting in late 2008, will be held in Shenzhen, the second one, starting after Chinese New Year 2009, in Shanghai. Later course locations are to be defined, but will likely be Shanghai.

Specific responsibilities include:

•        Finalizing the Curriculum and content of the MAS BUAS ARCH in Sustainability course together with the existing team;
•        Manage and oversee the course in the China location;
•        Coordinating guest lecturers, tutors and part time staff;
•        Acting as a representative for the BUAS in China;
•        Organizing and coordinating field trips, site visits, manufacturer and producer visits, etc. for the course;
•        Organizing, preparing and delivering lectures, tutorials, design studios, seminars and reviews within this course;
•        Giving lectures in a specific subtopic of sustainability in relation to architecture ;
•        Reviewing, grading and assessing post-professional student's work;
•        Supervising and advising same students;
•        Facilitating and maintaining good communication with staff and students;
•        Participating in academic, professional and research activities relating to sustainable architecture;


Candidate       

The ideal candidate displays the following attributes:

•        A professional undergraduate degree in architecture or allied field;
•        A professional postgraduate degree in architecture or allied field or equivalent architectural practice achievement;

•        Demonstrated capacity in teaching and lecturing at postgraduate level in a specialized area of architecture;
•        Experience in the development and management of university architecture courses and design studio projects;
•        Track record of supervision of master by thesis students;

•        Vibrant enthusiasm for ecological and sustainability issues relating to the human environment and architecture;
•        Knowledge of the historical, economical, social and technological aspects that affect both architecture and sustainability;
•        Qualifications of continued education in and/or evidence of extensive experience in professional/academic/research practice in sustainable architecture;
•        Familiarity with the contemporary discussion and key issues in sustainability in relationship to architecture;
•        Demonstrated capability in using tools to chart, measure, calculate, evaluate, illustrate, price, etc. aspects of sustainability within the field of architecture;

•        Experience in scholarly research with demonstrated outcomes or equivalent practice research and application in the field;
•        Demonstrated experience in linking practice learning and/or academic research with postgraduate curriculum and design studios;

•        Well developed interpersonal, written and oral communication skills;
•        Team spirit and proven ability to constructively work as a team member;
•        Demonstrated ability to forge links with the architecture profession, the research fields of ecology and sustainability and other relevant stakeholders working on the development of sustainable environments;

•        Profound knowledge of China's daily life, cultural characteristics, social and economic development, and environmental situation;
•        Extensive experience in architectural practice in China and a profound knowledge of the architectural history of China;
•        Understanding of the current key environmental problems and levels of sustainability in Chinese architecture;
•        Familiarity with the current Chinese legislation pertaining to the fields of architecture, environmental protection and sustainability;

•        Fluent in oral and written Chinese as well as English (or German);

•        Available by August 1, 2008, or upon agreement.

•        Understanding of the principles of anti-discrimination, staff and student equity, occupational health and safety and other legislation, and the willingness and capacity to implement equal employment opportunity and occupational health and safety plans, policies and procedures;
